Details

Dionaea muscipula, commonly known as the Venus Flytrap, is a fascinating carnivorous plant prized for its unique insect-catching traps and unusual appearance. Native to the wetlands of North and South Carolina in the USA, this remarkable species develops specialised leaves with hinged traps lined with sensitive trigger hairs. When an insect touches these hairs, the trap can snap shut, allowing the plant to digest its prey and absorb essential nutrients. Its distinctive green traps, which can develop vibrant red interiors in strong light, make the Venus Flytrap one of the most recognisable and captivating carnivorous plants. Unlike traditional houseplants, Dionaea muscipula requires mineral-free water, nutrient-poor growing conditions and a cool winter dormancy period to thrive.

Light: Venus Flytraps thrive in very bright light and require several hours of direct sunlight daily for healthy growth and strong trap development. Gradually introduce plants to intense sunlight to prevent scorching. A cool winter dormancy period is essential for long-term health.

Water: Keep the growing medium consistently moist during active growth, ideally using a shallow tray of rainwater, distilled water or reverse-osmosis water. Never use ordinary tap water or fertiliser. Reduce watering during winter dormancy, keeping the growing medium damp but not waterlogged.

We use environmentally friendly packaging where possible including 'Enviro-boxes', fully recyclable paper tape, biodegradable bubble wrap and starch packing peanuts which are fully soluble when saturated with water. Our 'Enviro-boxes' have been developed in conjunction with WRAP, the Waste and Resources Action Programme, the Enviro-box offers a sustainable and reliable alternative to larger double wall boxes.

Online orders are processed and dispatched within seven business days. The standard delivery fee is £5.95 for orders below £65; free shipping for orders above £65. Our plants are shipped Monday to Friday. Your order will be sent via Royal Mail or DPD using their next day service.

Click & Collect
All our products are available for Click and Collect from our Chiswick store at 21 Turnham Green Terrace, W4 1RG. We will notify you once your order is ready to collect from our store but we aim to have them ready 1 hour after receiving your order.
